Job Opening: Education and Outreach Intern

Job Description
The Education and Outreach Intern will assist Urban Sprouts staff to increase our program visibility within our four partner schools, implement our Health and Nutrition Outreach Team, and support our in-school garden education classes.

Job Responsibilities
  • Attend garden-based education classes at Urban Sprouts’ partner schools
  • Represent Urban Sprouts at school functions and community events
  • Design and develop new outreach and collateral materials
  • Assist the Garden Educators with garden maintenance and preparation of materials, including hauling loads of compost, general weeding, watering and repairs.
  • Assist the Garden Educators with implementing the Health and Nutrition Outreach Team including school outreach, planning and preparing activities, and supervising groups of volunteers during open garden Hours.
  • Communicating with Urban Sprouts staff on a regular and ongoing basis about work schedules, expectations and accomplishments.

Desired Skills and Experience
  • At least one year of experience mentoring, teaching, or tutoring youth, including in a volunteer capacity.
  • Demonstrated responsibility, commitment and initiative in a job, school commitment, or other project.
  • Strong oral communication skills, including public speaking skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently, flexible, enthusiastic, creative thinker.
Knowledge of or interest in topics including urban gardening, botany, environmental science, health and nutrition, food systems, food access, urban schools and social justice.
This is an unpaid internship working 8-15 hours per week for the full spring 2012 semester.
