Internship Opening: Garden Manager
(7-10 hours per week, February 2012- May 2012, $1,500 stipend position)

Organization Profile: Urban Sprouts is nonprofit organization that supports school gardens at San Francisco middle and high schools. We teach youth and their families to grow, harvest, prepare and eat vegetables from the school garden in order to help youth become more engaged in school, eat better, exercise more, and connect with the environment and each other.
Each year we work with over 500 youth at four San Francisco Unified School District schools: Aptos Middle School, June Jordan School for Equity, International Studies Academy, and Log Cabin Ranch.

Job Description
Urban Sprouts is seeking a Garden Manager to assist in the coordination and management of the June Jordan School for Equity (JJSE) Garden. The JJSE is a half-acre farm that includes an orchard, chicken coop, and a 600 sq. foot industrial greenhouse. JJSE students and teachers participate weekly in the garden through the Food and Garden Class, after-school programming, and advisory classes.

Job Responsibilities
Plan and organize weekly garden tasks for students, teachers, and community volunteers.
Oversee crop plan and harvest schedule.
Manage chicken feeding schedule.
Assist with garden tasks including weeding, pruning, planting, cultivating, watering, and making compost.
Communicate with Urban Sprouts staff on a regular and ongoing basis about work schedules, expectations, and accomplishments.
Participate in two Saturday Farmers Market (dates to be determined) with Urban Sprouts staff and students from the Food and Garden class

Desired Skills and Experience
At least one year of experience or equivalent knowledge of gardening or small-scale food production.
Demonstrated responsibility, commitment, and initiative in a job, academic endeavor, or other project.
Ability to work collaboratively and independently, flexible, enthusiastic, creative thinker.

This is a part-time internship, working 7-10 hours per week for the full spring semester, earning a stipend of $1,500. Schedule is flexible but majority of hours need to be completed Monday- Friday.
